Front Wheel Drive
Front wheel drive power wheelchairs have powered wheels in the front and casters are in the back allowing
the chair to go over uneven terrain or up and down hills more easily. Generally they have slower overall
speeds because it tends to “fish-tail” at higher speeds. These power wheelchairs can accommodate a basic
captain style seat to high end rehab seating and power positioning features such as; tilt/recline, power
seat, power legs, and standing.
Mid-Wheel or Center-Wheel Drive
Mid-wheel drive power wheelchairs have powered wheels in the center of the wheelchair. This makes it easy
to use and handle in confined spaces like kitchen and bathroom. Mid-Wheel drive wheelchairs have great
maneuverability due to their ability to turn on their own axis. These power wheelchairs can accommodate
either captain seat or high end rehab seating with power positioning features, such as; tilt/recline,
power seat, power legs, and standing.
Rear Wheel Drive
Rear wheel drive chairs have powered wheels at the back and casters in front. Using this type of chair is
similar to driving a vehicle. For people needing speed, these types of wheelchairs can be programmed for
high speed while maintaining stability and control. The balance of the wheelchair is ideal for outdoor
surroundings. The rotating radius is wider. These wheelchairs can range from lightweight, foldable and
easy to transport to high-end rehab with power positioning feature, such as; tilt/recline, power seat,
power legs, and standing.
